In addition to its openness to trade, its geographic location makes it a logical springboard into other nearby markets like New Zealand, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea.

Katie Bell http://lca2018.linux.org.au/schedule/presentation/83/ In Switzerland, people will be surprised at a bus that's 2min late. In Sydney, people will only consider it noteworthy if a bus is more than 30min late, and this varies greatly between routes and providers. So, how do Sydney busses (and third-party bus providers) stack up against each other and the world? To answer these questions we need data… lots of data. Hooray for open government data! Transport NSW publishes real-time information on the location and lateness of all public transport. Unfortunately it's ephemeral – there is no public log of historical lateness for us to analyse. To gather the data I needed I had to fetch, log and aggregate ephemeral real-time data that was never intended to be used this way. There ar...

"Scaling exported monitoring resources across a large, heterogeneous environment" from PuppetConf '12. Talk by Christian Larsen, Support Manager at Anchor. Learn more about Puppet: http://bit.ly/OUeBLk Abstract: I will discuss the evolution of our organisation's automated host monitoring. Specifically, I will discuss the performance issues and custom solutions we implemented whilst progressing from a static and inconsistent monitoring solution to centralising our logic and requirements in Puppet through the use of exported resources. Unhappy with the performance of a more traditional solution using exported resources with Nagios across a large number of nodes, we opted for a home grown and somewhat crazy solution. We now rely on Puppet to automatically generate each host's customised mo...
In late May and early June 1942, during World War II, submarines belonging to the Imperial Japanese Navy made a series of attacks on the cities of Sydney and Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. On the night of 31 May -- 1 June, three Ko-hyoteki-class midget submarines, each with a two-member crew, entered Sydney Harbour, avoided the partially constructed Sydney Harbour anti-submarine boom net, and attempted to sink Allied warships. Two of the midget submarines were detected and attacked before they could successfully engage any Allied vessels, and the crews scuttled their boats and committed suicide. These submarines were later recovered by the Allies. The third submarine attempted to torpedo the heavy cruiser USS Chicago, but instead sank the converted ferry HMAS Kuttabul, killing 21...
